Capsule review : Switzerland
Switzerland, like the American South, perversely prides itself on its own backwardness. Perhaps it deserves some credit for having built a functioning public infrastructure without chattel slavery. But if given the choice—say, in one of its beloved popular referenda—it would almost certainly approve the nearest modern alternative, acceptable to liberals like Milanović, of time-limited immigration with no path to citizenship, complete dependence on sponsoring employers, and the bare minimum civil rights. How long can Switzerland resist this temptation ? How well did it resist the temptation to enrich itself with the help of the Nazi regime ? The answer is the same : not very.
