anthropomorphization

Data scientists like to ascribe living characteristics to models and processes: machine learning, neural networks, artificial intelligence. The habit trends away from harmless metaphor towards misleading marketing and active deception.[1] Such practice is distinct from the earliest establishment of terms like computer memory, where a (human) brain is not necessarily implied (one speaks of memory in material science contexts, for example).

  1. One could even add here GenAI, where the elision deceitfully implies general rather than the more innocuous generative. ↩︎
